Daily Math Word Problems

I dont know about your kiddos but every year my class is SCARED of math word problems. When given a word problem on the district mandated unit tests they all of a sudden can no longer add or subtract! Eek! I die.

Therefore, this year I decided to implement Math Word Problems into my routine. I introduce it to my students as "Word Problem Wednesdays". I really like to stick to theme days in my such as Poetry Tuesday, Fix It Up Thursday (Grammar Sentences). It helps my students (and myself) stay on a schedule and know what is coming up!
I created a Daily Math Word Problems packet that includes 72 pages of a variety of math word problems such as: number sense, counting, addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, time, money, more/ less, and skip counting!  The problems are geared towards the primary grades. I based the pages around the FISH solving method:

F- Find the problem
I- Illustrate it
S- Solve it
H- How did you find the answer?

Here are some examples of the pages included:
So far my littles are loving Word Problem Wednesdays!  Are you doing word problems with you students?

Silly Sentences and Addition Facts Mini Book

I have no idea why I have waited so long to upload the Silly Sentences packet to TPT? However, tonight when uploading my Math Addition Facts Mini Book, I realized I never uploaded it… eek.

So tonight I have uploaded both of my new packets and you could be in luck to win them both!
*Look for the details at the bottom of the post!*
I created this Addition facts Mini Book to go along with our lessons on addition. The mini book is 24 pages long (I included directions on how to put it into a double sided/ half page book). It includes:
- Mini Book cover page
- Math Talk Words Page (define important addition words such as add, join, sum)
- Write your numbers page
-Addition Fact Pages (Adding zero through ten)
- Write it, Draw it, Create a Number sentence Page (for numbers one through ten)
*My students keep their books in their "Safe Place" Folder in their desk, which is where they store all of their important work! They will be able to quickly pull out their mini book for a quick reference on important addition information! :)
*I'll post pictures of my students' mini books tomorrow!*
Here is the Silly Sentences for Work Stations Packet I created! (It is currently on sale until Friday!) Here was my version from last year.

I really wanted to re-vamp it this year… and well, make it a little more fashionable right?

This activity can be used for your pocket chart workstation, word work workstation or for any other activity in your classroom where you would like to incorporate these silly sentences! The students will create a sentence using the words provided in the packet. The sentences will be formed by arranging the words in order of the colors (following the directions sheet) to create silly sentences that your students will LOVE!
I have included two sets of the same words: a colored set and a black and white set.
The colored set will need to be printed on white card stock, using colored ink. This will allow the students to place the sentences in the correct order using the colored glow around the words.
The black and white set may be printed on their corresponding colors cardstock or construction paper. Therefore, if you see a red color dot located at the top right corner, you will need to print those pages on red cardstock/ construction paper. Then you will do the same for the other colors: orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. Another option is to print the words on white cardstock/ paper and back them with their appropriate color.
*I suggest printing these silly words on either card-stock or a thick paper for durability!
Also included in the packet is: direction printable for students and corresponding recording sheets!

You can click here to see the Silly Sentences for Work Stations Packet at my TPT store (which is on sale until Friday).

Now time for the giveaway… one of you lucky ladies can win BOTH of these items!
In order to enter you must be a follower and answer the following question:
What is my current guilty pleasure TV show?

The first person to comment below that they are a follower of First Grade Fresh and correctly answer the question will win both packets! I will announce the winner tomorrow night! Good Luck!

100 days smarter... and a 100 days more tired.

Well, we did it... and when I say we, I mean me!
We made it through 100 days of school!

In First Grade we like to throw a celebration each year to commemorate our accomplishment of 100 days of school. This usually entails switching from each teachers classroom to complete some sort of fun activity about the number 100.

My activity was the always favorite 100s Fruit Loop Necklace. Students are asked to make a pattern using fruit loops sorted into groups of 10s. Then they string the group of 10 fruit loops  onto their necklace. Then, they repeat this same step in a different color until they make 100. My students do tend to lick their fruit loop necklaces (even after much warning not to) and get sugar all of their shirts (sorry parents).
Yet, on the plus side it leaves my room smelling fresh and fruity!

As you can see my students were also asked to wear 100 day gear. We told the students to choose any article of clothing and decorate the item with 100 things. Most students chose to decorate a shirt. They looked to cute!

Below are pictures of my students in another teachers classroom. She had the students make 100th day Trail Mix. The students were asked to choose a snack from the bowl and sort that item into 10s (therefore they could have 10 pretzels, 10 marshmallows, 10 skittles, 10 gummies, etc.) I went in Ms. Thomas' room to snap pictures of my kids... and MAINLY to steal gummy bears from my children. Can you blame me?

Math Focus Wall and My New Obsession...

(Yes, I realize the dates are both mixed up... you can thank my afternoon helpers for rearranging everything. Thank Jesus for my sweet lil Calendar Helper Seanna who keeps things straight when she gets to school each morning :) .

I have this HUGE problem when it comes to teaching... I constantly decide I do not like how something looks and want to change an entire wall immediately. So, for my birthday I asked the bf for the shut your mouth... Cricut (she is lime green and gorgeous). Did he understand why I would need this? No. Did he complain that I did not need this? Yes. However, it was MY birthday... so he lost out on that battle.

My new obsession with cutting out scrapbook paper (which I LOVE scrapbook or card stock paper) began there. I decided I wanted to redo my Math wall to be easily assessable to the students and interactive.

The Calendar Math Pocket Chart is from Lakeshore Learning. I love this thing. One of my student helpers changes the dates, place value and patterns around in the morning, so I do not have to spend my time doing this chore.

I also added the interactive Weather Pig. I saw this idea on a website however, I was NOT willing to pay the $40.00 for the self made Pig. So, I made it myself. The students can decide what the Pig will wear for each days weather. So cute. However, my poor lil pig is already meeting her death. Next year I will invest in the dun dun dun DUN... Weather Panda! $12.99 and so cute (Thanks Ms. Thomas for finding this!).

For one of my Math Workstations (which I will do a post about later in the week, when I return to school and take pictures of my tubs and rotations chart) students go to the Calendar Math Chart and fill out this recording sheet. Students arrange the Place Value and Weather Pig and then look at the parts previously discussed in whole group and complete their worksheet.
